Chapter Sixteen

I stood beside Zephyr, Roth, and Sen, the Sanctuary elves in front of me, and the elven masters off to one side. After learning everything I could, I’d gone to gather the masters to talk to them about the problem I was facing.

They’d agreed that I needed more elves, especially elves who could handle the heat of a battle and work together. Also elves who trusted me or Seth and Ronan.

Seth was also present, standing with the fire elves and Erlan. They’d come with me rather than to the portal base. It left the Texas portal more vulnerable, and it was our duty to protect that, but within hours, we’d be out in the wilderness, hunting down the cult elves and the tablets they carried.

I looked out over the elves and then stood forward as Zephyr lifted his head higher.

“I know many of you have lived in the Sanctuary all your lives, and for the most part, your lives have been completely peaceful with no need to challenge or fight others. And then I came along, and I brought danger with me. I didn’t mean to. I’d have kept the Sanctuary safe and hidden if I could. But danger has come. And it’s not gone away yet.”

I paused as I looked around at the faces and thought about the best way to phrase this next part. While danger had come and it wasn’t all down to me, I felt responsible. This was my fight and a fight over my life and who I was. Asking anyone to join me in that was hard.

“You all know what Amcika wishes to do and why that means danger for us. I won’t exaggerate the threat or focus on it. What I will focus on is this. You have all come here day after day to be taught by four of the most amazing elves I know. And although they never taught you directly to fight wars or use your abilities against other elves in combat, they have prepared you in ways that no others could. Now there’s a threat out there that would take all this away. Will you come with me to stop them? It won’t be easy, and you’re likely to find yourselves tired and spent beyond anything you’ve ever felt before, but we’ll be alongside you. Will you stand with us?”

There was a deafening roar from the elves as most of them raised their fists and called out.

I exhaled, so much emotion filling me that I realized I was shaking. As the elves came forward, I had the masters help me assign them to groups, pairing up an elf from each element into squads that were fairly evenly matched until there were ten groups of four standing in front of me. In terms of an army, it wasn’t a lot of elves, but with the elves from the warehouse and the commanders I had like Emily, Erlan, and Seth, who had been training for war with me, it was a significant improvement.
